This Summer, we're featuring original photography by Robert Erlichman. Below, you'll see some of his photographs, and read his own words about his work.
When I went back to college in my sophomore year, my older brother bought a new camera and gave me his old one. I starting carrying it with me everywhere I went and soon discovered that this was not a mechanical device at all but rather a box endowed with very magical powers.
It had a small hole you could look in and when you did – there was a whole universe inside. A living universe filled with wonder, with things large and small, powerful and delicate and even things joyous and terrible. But throughout, it was a universe always filled with awe and wonder and a magnificent beauty in its own way.
But that’s not all – when you saw something you really liked you just pressed a little button on the top of the box. Then after carefully applying the correct potions and procedures, it would yield up a miniature replica of what you saw so you could be reminded of that inner universe. It was magic . . . with Tri-X and a daylight tank developing negs in the dorm bathroom.
And so this journey began and continues to this day with increasing reverence for this thing we call the Universe. Light and Dark reduced and captured as light and dark.
As I pursue this Art of Light and Dark, I invite you to join me on the noble quest that can be photography and Seeing.
Seeing
It is a picture
it has no words.
Turn down the volume of your mind
then you can hear it with your heart.
If it speaks to you
listen carefully.
If it sings to you
dance wildly.
If you can answer it
you are drawn.
Then you are a picture
that has no words.
And it shall contemplate you
to See.
All of Robert's original photography is for sale in the Creative Center. Smaller prints and note cards sets are available as well.
